Walk Around Downtown Yangon: A Photo Journal

We went for a walk around downtown Yangon where you easily can spend a full day! If you are interested in the history of Yangon, it might be a good idea to add at least an additional full day for this as there is so much history here.

We asked the cab driver to drop us off at Sule Pagoda. A sight you don’t see every day and funny to think about; How many people can say, that they have been in a roundabout with a 2000-year-old golden temple in the middle of it? This is just one example, where the modern Asian business life is unified with ancient Burmese tradition. Right next to Sule Pagoda is City Hall that, once again, combine traditional Burmese traditions (look for the decorative details such as peacocks, nagas and three-tiered pyatthat turrets) with Western architecture.

We continued our walk to Ayeyarwady Bank, Immanuel Baptist Church, High Court, Independence Monument and Yangon Stock Exchange before taking a well deserved refreshing break at the Strand Hotel. After the well-deserved break, we wandered around the city to watch the not-so-busy streets of downtown Yangon (compared to the areas around Shwedagon Pagoda) before we took a cab to SK Hot Pot which probably is Yangon’s most popular hot-pot joint. Come at night, when the joint is fully packed and take in the Burmese atmosphere and where you can get raw ingredients to cook in spicy Sichuan-style broth; a meal that won’t set you back more than K6000.
